Nothing Can Separate Us From the Love of God - Tim Horman

This week at One Church, Tim Horman wrapped up our Romans 8 series by exploring one of the most hope-filled passages in the entire Bible: Romans 8:35–39. It’s Paul’s great crescendo — a declaration of a love so strong that nothing in all creation can ever tear us away from it.

In this post, we’ll look at what Paul is saying, how Tim unpacked it, and why this promise matters so deeply in the real ups and downs of life.

Romans 8:35–39

Romans 8 ends not quietly, but with a roar. Paul shifts from teacher to preacher, rolling out a series of powerful, rapid-fire questions designed to convince us of one truth: God’s love for you in Christ is unbreakable.

Paul asks:

  • Who can be against us?

  • Could God turn against us?

  • Could Satan condemn us?

  • Could anything — even suffering or fear — pull us away from Christ’s love?

And the answer, every time, is: No. Nothing. Ever.

Tim highlighted a fascinating detail: up until this point, Paul mentions the Holy Spirit more than 20 times — but in this final section, not once. Why? Because Paul is now describing the kind of person the Spirit forms: someone so rooted in Jesus that they can say with full confidence, “Nothing can separate me from His love.”

“We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
Romans 8:37

Tim unpacked this phrase beautifully. The word conqueror comes from the Greek nike, meaning victory. But Paul uses an intensified form — “hyper-nike” — almost like saying super conquerors. Not because we’re strong, but because Christ’s victory is stronger than anything that could threaten us.

Paul then lists the full range of forces that might make us think we’re at risk:

  • hardship

  • distress

  • persecution

  • famine

  • danger

  • even death itself

And after listing every extreme he can think of, he concludes:

“I am convinced… nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38–39

Why This Matters on Monday Morning

Most of us know what it’s like to feel uncertain — to wonder if we’re doing enough, believing enough, trying hard enough. Some of us have seasons where faith feels fragile. Others carry wounds from disappointment, grief, unanswered prayers, or the failures of other Christians.

Paul’s words — and Tim’s message — remind us that our security in Christ doesn’t rest on our strength at all.

It rests on God’s.

The Father planned our salvation.
Jesus secured it through His cross and resurrection.
The Spirit applies, sustains, and completes it in us.

Even when we can’t feel Him.
Even when we doubt.
Even when we fall short.
Even when circumstances are brutal.

“Our faith is not upheld by us. It is upheld by the Spirit of God within us.”

This is why Paul can say with boldness that we are “more than conquerors.” Not because we never struggle — but because Christ’s victory is stronger than our struggle.

Many believers carry quiet fears:

  • “What if I walk away?”

  • “What if I fail one too many times?”

  • “What if my faith isn’t strong enough?”

But Romans 8 tells us this:

God doesn’t lose His children

And nothing you go through can separate you from Jesus’ love — not your circumstances, not spiritual attack, not suffering, not confusion, not even your weakest moment.

Romans 8 ends with one of the most comforting truths in Scripture:

You are loved by God with a love that cannot be broken.

Not by hardship.
Not by fear.
Not by spiritual pressure.
Not by your own fragility.
Not by anything in the universe.

And because that love is secure, you can walk into your week not with fear, but with joy.

One Way to Live It Out This Week

Each morning, pause for 20 seconds and breathe this simple prayer:

“Holy Spirit, remind me today that nothing can separate me from the love of Christ.”

Let that truth shape your decisions, your relationships, and your sense of peace.

A Short Prayer

Lord Jesus,
thank You for a love that cannot be shaken.
When we feel uncertain, remind us that Your Spirit holds us.
When fear rises, speak Your peace.
When we doubt ourselves, anchor us again in Your grace.
Help us walk in the confidence that nothing — absolutely nothing — can separate us from Your love.
Amen.
