Why the 21st Century is the Most Christian Ever - Rikk Watts

This past Sunday we were blessed to have Rikk Watts speak at our 5.30pm service. Rick spoke about how Christianity has shaped the modern world in profound ways, often unrecognized by both believers and skeptics alike. His message was both challenging and encouraging, revealing that the Gospel’s impact on history is greater than we often realize.

Below you’ll find a video and audio recording of his message as well as a summary article with small group discussion questions.

A World That Feels Under Siege

Many Christians today feel like they are living in a post-Christian world where faith is declining, and society is becoming more hostile toward religious belief. Rikk acknowledged this perception but urged listeners to reconsider. The reality, he argued, is that the Gospel has already won in ways that are deeply embedded in our modern world. The values, principles, and even scientific advancements we take for granted today are, in fact, rooted in Christianity.

A Surprising Encounter with an Atheist

Rikk shared a personal story about a British atheist he met who believed religion was responsible for many of the world’s problems. However, after an extended conversation, the atheist realized that many of the things he cherished about modern civilization—human rights, equality, and compassion—were direct consequences of the teachings of Jesus. The realization was so profound that he insisted Rikk should make a documentary about it.

Tom Holland’s Discovery

Rikk referenced historian Tom Holland, who initially viewed Christianity as a regressive force that had drained the world of its excitement and vitality. However, after years of studying ancient history, Holland came to a startling conclusion: Christianity was the single most transformative force in human civilization. Unlike the Greeks and Romans, who saw the weak as disposable, Christianity introduced the radical idea that every human life has value.

The World’s Most Christian Century

One of Rikk's most provocative claims was that the 21st century is the most Christian century in history—not in terms of church attendance, but in terms of values. Our world champions innovation, scientific discovery, human rights, and social justice—all principles rooted in the Gospel. While society may claim to have moved beyond Christianity, it still operates within the moral framework that Jesus established.

Seven Areas Where Christianity Has Shaped the World

Rikk identified seven key areas where Christianity has shaped civilization:

  1. Change as a Gift – Unlike ancient civilizations that resisted change, the Gospel introduced the idea that transformation is good and necessary.

  2. Knowledge Through Experience – Modern science is built on the Christian belief that truth is discovered through observation and testing, not just philosophical speculation.

  3. Dynamic Cities and Societies – Unlike rigid ancient social structures, Christianity allowed for upward mobility and social transformation.

  4. Equality of All People – The idea that every person has inherent worth is uniquely Christian.

  5. The Body as Good – Ancient thought often saw the body as something to be escaped, while Christianity affirmed the dignity of physical existence.

  6. Love and Compassion as Central – The idea that the greatest virtue is love comes directly from Jesus.

  7. The Rejection of False Gods – Christianity removed the fear of capricious deities and introduced a God of justice and love.

Living Out the Gospel in Today’s World

Rikk challenged the church to stop seeing itself as under siege and instead recognize the profound ways in which it has already shaped culture. He urged believers to live out their faith boldly, not as moral police, but as bearers of life and transformation. The Gospel is not just about individual salvation—it is a blueprint for a better world.
