Rubber hits the road

We are all on a journey of growth.  All growth is spiritual growth. Let us encourage and spur one another on to love and good works until the day Jesus comes again.

Goal Setting

When I board a plane for a long haul flight, I always look with interest and some apprehension to see what the seating lottery presents to me. I hope I will be sitting next to a 4'11" Chinese grandmother and not a 6'4" member of the Bulgarian weightlifting team. The man I sat next to was somewhere between the two extremes but was determined not to say a word to me for the whole flight. He put his headphones on the minute he sat down and didn't remove them once. Not the best witnessing opportunity I have ever had! As I promised, I enjoyed the flight! I confessed in a recent sermon to being greedy by nature. Well, while I'm on a roll let me tell you that I am also lazy by nature. This presents a challenge when I am out of routine (like on a trip to the US and Haiti.) Truism No. 3 "If David Ratten doesn't set goals, he achieves very little." So being away from home presents challenges but also opportunities. One of the opportunities is to reflect more, read more and pray more. So, for …

Endure or Enjoy

My son Andrew suggested I title this post, "Groundhog Day".This was as he farewelled me for the second time exactly 24 hoursapart. The reason  knew I was not a bit part in the Bill Murray movie is that Australia now has two gold medals - Go Aussie! The embarresment of arriving for my flight 24 hours early has  subsided, however I kept a very low profile yesterday. Thank you to all who added a comment on my blog page. I enjoyed reading them. I don't sleep on planes. It is not that I don.t want to, its that I can't. Believe me, I've tried - everything! A few years ago, my secretary - Beryl Graham - gave me two sleeping pills for a flight to the US. I waited until I was really tired and popped both pills. They did make me drowsy but I stayed very much awake. Truism No. 2 - David Ratten does not sleep on planes. And so my attitude asI approach a long-haul flight is that this is something to endure. Just suck it up and get through it. Well, as I have prepared for this flight,…

On your marks – get set – oops!

I do feel like an Olympic athlete ready at the start line and poised to begin. 8 Flights in 11 days and the promise of excitement and challenge. (The comparison to an Olympic athlete ends rights there!). I always forget something when I travel – I mean always. There is the infamous incident of leaving my good trousers at home when travelling for an important speaking engagement. Another time I forgot my wallet with photo identification and had to plead with the check-in assistant to let me on the flight. Of course there was last year when I flew to Toowoomba to speak at a conference and left all of my speaking notes at home. It is a David Ratten truism – “He always forgets something when he travels.” I was determined this time to head overseas having forgotten nothing. I enlisted the organisational prowess of Sue Grace who made me a list of essential items and grilled me mercilessly until we agreed that all was in place. I was ready to fly in the face of histo…

I'm a blogger!

Aug 03, 2012  |   From the minister  |   David Ratten

I am not sure whether or not I am proud of the fact, but I am now officially a blogger! For the uninitiated, this means that I have a blog on the World Wide Web (Internet). From today, and for the next two weeks, you can follow what I am doing and what I am seeing. A very good question at this point would be, Why would I want to follow a blog of David Ratten’s life over the next two weeks? Of course it’s your decision but I am looking forward to sharing with you the details of my trip to the United States and Haiti beginning tomorrow. I have a wonderful opportunity to travel with some staff from Compassion Australia to see their work in the strife torn country of Haiti. (remember the earthquake!). I will be joining a group of pastors from around Australia and travelling to Haiti via the Global Leadership Summit being held Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago. (This is the same event One Community Church hosted last November and which we will host again this year.) We …

How We Grow

Jul 11, 2012  |   From the minister  |   Rod Clements

I love watching stuff grow.  When the vege patch is working well I get very excited.  I love like to eat to squash, snow peas and tomatoes.  When I grow them and pick them from my own garden, they taste even better.  I love watching my kids grow.  Seeing my them learn new things, see and experience parts of their environment for the first time allows me as a parent to re-enter that experience also.  Their expression of excitement is contagious.   Growth is all around us.  When things are healthy and conditions are normal growth seems easy, natural and almost effortless...growth just happens! In the plant world when conditions are right growth comes easily and at rapid rates. I grew up on the North Coast of New South Wales.  One summer it was my job to mow the lawns of our family home.  When negotiating this task with my father he told the height he wanted the grass kept, but he would not tell how often I would need t…
